Hydraulic oil presses use pressurized hydraulic fluid to drive a piston that compresses oil-bearing seeds against a perforated barrel. Unlike continuous screw pressing, hydraulic pressing operates in batch mode — each cycle loads 100 kg of prepared seed, applies pressure for 30–40 minutes (hot pressing) or 2 hours (cold pressing), then releases a solid oil cake. This intermittent action keeps the pressing temperature low (typically below 60°C for cold press models), which helps preserve heat-sensitive nutrients, natural aroma, and the oxidative stability of the finished oil.
The technology is particularly suited to high-value, low-yield seeds where oil quality matters more than throughput — sesame, coconut, walnut, flaxseed, and shea are common applications. Industrial hydraulic presses achieve residual oil rates of 6–8% in the cake, compared to 5–12% for screw presses, depending on seed type and preparation quality. Double-barrel configurations with sliding rails effectively double daily output by allowing alternating loading and pressing without a second machine.
